The letter you got last time, about Dom at the climbing gym and the name I couldn't come up with. I didn't outline that one.
Before I wrote it I'd pasted a pile of research into my vault. A breakdown of how video creators hold attention: open loops, stakes, the reason people stay past the first few seconds. It went in messy, got filed, and I stopped thinking about it.
Then I sat down to draft the letter and asked for help shaping it.
I never mentioned it
The outline that came back: open on the blank where his name should be, close it fast with the name, open the bigger question about why a notes app could do that at all, pay it off at the end.
That is the research note. Picked up and used on the thing I was actually working on, because it was relevant, not because I remembered owning it.
Filing versus working
Every notes system I've had was good at the filing part. Tidy titles, the right folder, tags I never went back and searched. What I had was a well organized place for my thinking to sit.
A note that gets filed is still a note sitting there. This one did something I wouldn't have known to ask for, because I'd forgotten it was mine.
The part it wouldn't use
Same session. My note about Dom described him by how I'd pick him out across a room, the way you'd describe anyone you met once and wanted to recognize again. Fine in my notes. It got left out of the letter, and I hadn't asked for that.
